 About City Week 2017

For CW2017 summary-revNow in its seventh year, City Week is the premier gathering of the international financial services community. It brings together policy makers and senior industry representatives from around the globe to consider together the future of financial markets and London, in particular. It consists of two days of cutting-edge conferences, seminars and networking opportunities, with other satellite events being held earlier during the week.

This year’s gathering, City Week 2017, is being held against the backdrop of two highly significant changes in the geopolitical context.

The first is that the UK will be leaving the EU within two years on a basis as yet to be determined. The only certainty at this stage is that the UK will leave the Single Market. While many hope that there will be a bespoke deal for access to the EU27’s markets for financial services, there can be no certainty about this, nor is there any guarantee that a transitional period can be agreed. Given the reliance of European corporates on the City of London for their financing, the impact of any loss of access will also have a major impact on EU27 countries.

The second is the new political direction being taken by President Trump in the U.S. With the advent of the ‘America First’ doctrine, there is certainly a cloud hanging over the future of globalisation and free trade. America has already withdrawn from the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the prospects for the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership also look bleak. The picture is further complicated by continuing turmoil in the Middle East, the future of sanctions around the world, the evolving relationship between the U.S. and both Russia and China, and the continuing shift of the centre of economic gravity towards the East.

This challenging context will make for some very interesting discussions at City Week 2017.

Key topics include:

  • Strategic opportunities for the UK financial services industry
  • The future of free trade in the post-BREXIT & ‘America First’ era – guidance for FS firms
  • BREXIT - consequences and opportunities
  • Regulatory equivalence – from BREXIT to a new global regulatory system
  • Culture, individual responsibility and corporate governance
  • RegTech, Robo-Advice and the future of artificial intelligence in the FS industry
  • Cybercrime - Innovative defences to innovative attacks
  • Potential for trade deals with Commonwealth countries
  • The scope for the UK and US financial centres to cooperate in a post-BREXIT world
  • FS industry opportunities from the opening of China's FS markets & the country's global expansion
  • Deepening the links in financial services between India and the UK
  • FinTech – where next for the transformation of the financial services industry
  • Taking Green Finance global

Over the course of City Week 2017, a highly eminent faculty of international speakers will explore these crucial themes, including their economic and market impact.
