Pete started his career with the CoLP where he spent a number of years at different ranks going on to specialise in serious and organised crime with a real focus on cyber and economic crime. He was then seconded into the MPS for a time, and in 2017, returned to the CoLP as Detective Chief Superintendent, Head of Crime and Counter Terrorism. Pete went on to become the Assistant Chief Constable at Thames Valley Police leading the Southeast Regional response to terrorism, and organised crime, and worked as a Public Order Gold Commander and Strategic Firearms Commander.

In January 2022 he returned once more to CoLP as Assistant Commissioner, and in October 2023 he became the Temporary Commissioner before being selected as the 17th Commissioner for the City of London Police in September 2024. Pete is the National Police Chiefs Council Lead for Economic Crime and Cybercrime. Pete is also the national policing lead for Cyber security and is undertaking a Doctorate in Professional Studies (Transdisciplinary) with a focus on this area.
