Jan Putnis is head of the Financial Regulation Group and Chair of the Financial Institutions Group at Slaughter and May.
His practice focuses on matters of strategic importance to financial institutions, with an emphasis on new business models and related regulatory advice, governance matters, group restructurings and multi-jurisdictional transactions. He also advises extensively on regulatory capital and operational resilience issues. The adoption of new and emerging technologies, including generative and other forms of AI, in the financial services sector is a pervasive feature of his work.

Jan advises banks, insurance and reinsurance groups, asset managers, other investment firms, market infrastructure operators and a broad range of fintech businesses. He has advised extensively on UK, EU, and international regulatory proposals and developments, and the strategic implications of these for clients’ businesses.

Jan is recognised as a band 1 practitioner in the 'Financial Services: Non-contentious Regulatory' section of Chambers UK, 2024 and is in the ‘Hall of Fame’ in the same section of Legal 500 2024. He has been the contributing editor of Banking Regulation (Lexology In-Depth) (formerly The Banking Regulation Review) since 2010 and has published widely on banking regulation, Brexit, resolution planning, company law and investment management.
