Alderman Alastair King DL is the 696th Lord Mayor of London.  The principal role of Lord Mayor is as a Global Ambassador for UK’s Financial and Professional Services, alongside championing charitable interests for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and the wider community.

 The Lord Mayor’s Mayoral Theme is ‘Growth Unleashed’. Growth Unleashed is boosting the City of London to drive growth through renewed spirit of ambition, innovative technology and our many communities. The theme is split into three pillars of activity: Growth optimisation, seizing the white heat of technology, and communities. As part of this, he is championing the launch of a series of City Belonging Networks. The networks will bring Employee Resource Groups and individuals together across the Square Mile to create events, improve communication and consultation, and foster community.

Following his early career as a City of London lawyer, the Lord Mayor has had an entrepreneurial career in financial services.  After a period working in early-stage Venture Capital, he started a successful Buy-Out vehicle with a colleague and then founded his own asset management house, specialising in global fixed income.  The Lord Mayor serves on the board of five City of London-based financial services companies, four of which he chairs (he is the founder of two of them).  

In his civic career the Lord Mayor has served as an elected representative for the Ward of Queenhithe continuously since 1999. He was appointed Deputy in 2006 and then elected as Alderman in 2016. He was elected as Sheriff of London (2022-23).  The Lord Mayor also has substantial involvement in the Livery movement, as well as serving as Chair of the British Liver Trust – the national liver charity - and supporting other charitable interests. He is a Deputy Lieutenant for Greater London an Hon. Visiting Professor at Bayes Business School – part of the University of London. He is an Honorary Fellow - Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment (CISI), an Honorary Visiting Professor - Bayes Business School, City St George’s, University of London and an Honorary Bencher - Honourable Society of the Middle Temple

Of proud Scottish heritage, the Lord Mayor was educated at Oundle and at the Universities of Bristol and Kent, the College of Law in London and the London Business School. His interests include boxing and hill walking in Scotland with his wife, The Lady Mayoress Florence King, and their Italian Greyhound.
