Business Birmingham

Birmingham Unlimited

Welcome to a city powered by technology and innovation. Birmingham and its city region have unlimited business potential – investing billions into transport and infrastructure. It is a leading European destination with the resources to help energise your business and power your ambitions. Home to over 42,000 companies, including 900 international firms, it is in the centre of a £94 billion regional economy.

The largest regional financial centre in the UK, Birmingham and its surrounding area is home to 24,000 financial and business service providers including HSBC, the Islamic Bank of Britain and Deutsche Bank. It is also the base for the recently launched Business Growth Fund, a government-back initiative that has £2.5 billion to invest in growing businesses.

The first BT Wireless City, Birmingham is also the UK’s hotspot for e-commerce start-ups.
Transport across the region is equally fast moving with £200 million being invested at Birmingham Airport, recently voted Best UK Airport, the £17 billion High Speed rail link and the iconic £600 million New Street Station Gateway scheme. Birmingham is also the most connected UK city, with access to over 90% of the UK market within a four hour travel time and 126 direct connections from Birmingham Airport every day. Yet, office rental costs are half those in the capital and the cost of living is significantly lower.

It is a city of real creativity that delivers the ideas, entrepreneurial spirit and work ethic needed for business success, supported by its status as the highest ranking English city for university quality (Cushman & Wakefield, 2011). This results in an existing and emerging talent pool, which provides access to a working age population of 4.3 million and 97,000 highly skilled graduates within one-hour’s drive each year.

Business Birmingham, the city’s inward investment programme, is your link to establishing or growing your presence in the city.

We can introduce your business to R&D contacts, banking and professional services networks, and are here to help you benefit from the city’s strong enterprise culture.

By working as a strategic partner and consultant with your internal project team, we can provide relevant information for your organisation and a comprehensive package of support.

Voted the UK’s most attractive regional city for quality of life by Mercer’s 2011 Quality of Living Survey, you won’t just do business in Birmingham. You’ll thrive. So if you’re looking for a modern, international location with excellent communication links and a bright, young and highly talented workforce, get in touch to find out more or visit us at Cityweek 2011, stand 30.

Casablanca Finance City

Conception of Casablanca Finance City

Casablanca Finance City (CFC) has been created under the leadership of his Majesty the King Mohammed VI and has the full support of the Moroccan government. It is a financial gateway for investors looking to access the fast-growing markets of Africa, as well as for international businesses to set up headquarters for their regional operations.

CFC will confirm Morocco’s position as an international financial hub for accessing North, West and Central Africa, and will market Casablanca as a platform to the region.

The Benefits

Opportunities for investment in Africa are immense, but there are practical difficulties to accessing them. CFC was put in place to act as the business hub, one single platform, to access markets across Francophone Africa and beyond.

CFC will make business dealings easier for international investors targeting the Greater North West Africa (GNWA) region.  The GNWA can be defined simply as the majority of French speaking countries that stretch from the southern tip of the DRC, all the way up to Libya and then west to the furthest reaches of the Maghreb and the Atlantic Ocean.

It will serve international investors as a trustworthy and accommodating capital market hub in order to take best advantage of what is still a diverse rather than a homogenous continent.

As a Chartered, independent professional education body, we have a statutory duty to work in the public interest, and are committed to raising professional standards across the banking sector.

A YouGov survey we commissioned in September 2010 reflects the strong public demand for professionalism in banking: 73% of (over 2,000) respondents throughout Great Britain,  across gender, age and social demographics stated the availability of professionally qualified staff as important to them when visiting a bank branch.  This reinforces our 2009 YouGov survey, in which 88% of respondents agreed that “all bankers should take professional banking exams".

City Disputes Panel

The City Disputes Panel was founded in 1994 with the support of the Bank of England, the City of London Corporation, the CBI, the Financial Services Authority and Lloyd’s of London.

Its role is to create and supply bespoke conflict management and dispute resolution procedures. The CDP is experienced in working to meet the needs of the City and the financial services industry, other commercial corporations and those who do business with them, in the UK and internationally.

  • Our key objective is to ensure that businesses are able to:
  • preserve their commercial relationships
  • keep costs within budget constraints
  • focus time and resources on their core business activities
  • preserve their corporate image and reputation

The role of the CDP

The CDP is an independent, neutral body and can provide the reassurance of integrity andimpartiality that is the key to the successful resolution of a dispute.

It is a resource for City businesses and practitioners, who can obtain impartial advice on conflict management and dispute resolution and explore innovative, cost effective solutions that provide alternatives to conventional referral to the courts.

It is increasingly recognised that public disagreement is damaging to businesses and markets.

Alternative means of resolving disputes provide a cost effective investment by helping corporates and other organisations to maintain brand reputation and to preserve commercially sensitive information.

The CDP provides a complementary service working with and providing support to internal and external counsel to establish and deliver the best approach for resolving a particular dispute.

How the CDP works with parties

Unique problems require unique solutions and the CDP is a pioneer in the field of multi-party and complex matters. We seek to bring together the optimum combination of process and people.

The CDP will explore with those in dispute the basis of the claims being made and the common factors. We will agree how issues such as points of law, liability and compensation are to be determined; how claimants are to be identified, what they will have to prove – and how.

Using our extensive experience the CDP will provide practical advice and guidance about procedures generally and on matters such as the best way of establishing a review tribunal – what will be its role, powers and limitations; what areas of specialist knowledge will be needed?

In some cases an established process such as mediation or arbitration is the most appropriate approach and the flexibility of our procedures and rules means that they can be tailored to the particular needs of those involved.

CDP panellists are drawn from a community of senior figures who offer judicial wisdom and market knowledge as well as their skills as facilitators. Additionally we provide a seamless effective administrative support service including premises, equipment and personnel.
